El Alamein Museums and Art Galleries

(El Alamein, Egypt)

View of the War CemeteryDespite being a very small town with few attractions, there are a couple of museums, which shed light on the special history of El Alamein. Naturally, both of these museums focus on the Battle of El Alamein, which took place here during WWII, and war enthusiasts and history buffs will enjoy the selection of war machines and other relics from the North African campaign.

Unfortunately, there are no art galleries in El Alamein or cultural centres to offer a view of the local people who had to endure the fighting. Here is some information about the popular El Alamein War Museum.

El Alamein's main museum offers a comprehensive view of the North African arena during WWII. Outside the building, the garden is full of massive tanks, artillery and other military vehicles, which operated during the famous battle. Inside, visitors can check out the five halls, each of which is dedicated to one of the four main countries involved in the war, as well as one general information room. The weapons, uniforms and other artefacts make this one of the best museums in Egypt for an insight into WWII in this country. Audio recordings tell the story from both sides in a number of languages.
